FINLAND - NEW BRIGHT SPOT FOR VIETNAMESE TUNA

According to VASEP information, due to the decrease in fishing output of fishing fleets in coastal areas, the EU is increasing the import of fish from sources outside the block, including Finland. Although this Nordic country's tuna imports in the first half of this year were only at the same level as the same period last year, imports from Vietnam are strongly increasing.

According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, Vietnam's tuna exports to Finland have grown continuously since the beginning of the year, including many months with a 3-digit increase. Cumulatively in the first 8 months of 2023, Vietnam's tuna exports to Finland reached nearly 4.4 million USD, an increase of 3 times compared to the same period in 2022.

Notably, compared to the same period in 2022, Vietnam's tuna products to this market are becoming more and more diverse. Specifically, last year Vietnamese frozen tuna meat/loin products could not reach this market, this year Vietnamese businesses received many orders. And this group of meat/tuna loin products is the main export product of Vietnam to this Northern European country with a proportion of 47%.

Vietnam is currently the 5th largest tuna supplier to the Finland market after Thailand and the Philippines. Along with Vietnam, this year Thailand's tuna exports to this market also increased positively by 26%. And Thailand is the largest source of tuna outside the block for the Finland market.

According to businesses, the Free Trade Agreement between the EU and Vietnam (EVFTA) is helping Vietnamese tuna businesses expand their commercial activities in this market in the context of rising tuna prices.
